This dramatic pivot, which began in December, wasn't just a personal choice but a recognition of a "tectonic shift" in the industry, where AI's capabilities exploded from simple auto-completion to complex reasoning and full application development within a matter of months. His daily 10-12 hour deep dive into AI since then underscores the urgency and immense potential he sees, especially for a country like Nepal.

The AI Revolution's Tectonic Shift

Prasish explains that while AI has been around for a while, December marked a critical turning point. Before then, AI coding was largely limited to auto-complete functions; suddenly, it could build and compile entire applications from a simple prompt. This jump from 10% to 95% AI-generated code in a year is, as he puts it, "insane" and promises massive changes across industries.

The evolution of AI has moved beyond mere token generation to sophisticated reasoning, where models can think in steps, much like humans. This capability allows AI to take different angles and provide nuanced answers. What's more, AI is now "tool calling," capable of performing actions like sending messages or even designing in software like Photoshop or Figma.

This progression has led to "agentic" AI, where individual AI agents can perform specific tasks. When a large task requires multiple steps, different agents can spawn, complete their parts, and then combine their efforts, mirroring how human teams collaborate.

The Power of Open-Source AI

A significant driver of this rapid progress and accessibility is the rise of open-source AI models. Prasish notes that while giants like OpenAI and Google initially dominated with expensive, closed-source models, the landscape shifted when countries like China, facing chip embargoes, strategically decided to open-source their AI models to foster global competition. This strategy has led to an explosion of powerful, free, and rapidly improving models.

Meta's Llama models were early contributors, but the real competition intensified with releases from Chinese companies like Zhipu, Qwen, and MiniMax. These open-source models are now often on par with, or even surpassing, closed-source alternatives in various benchmarks, especially for tasks like image generation, and are becoming much cheaper to run.

Prasish categorizes AI models into three tiers. At the top are "frontier models," often closed to the public and used by leading labs for internal research and system improvement. Below that are paid models from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic, which offer superior reasoning but come with a monthly cost that can be prohibitive for many. The third tier comprises "open-weight" or open-source models, which are free, can be hosted locally, and are improving daily, democratizing access to powerful AI capabilities.

AI for Business Efficiency and Innovation

AI, according to Prasish, is not just a feature but a "foundational" technology, akin to an operating system's shell. It's poised to integrate into every smartphone, smart device, and system, becoming economically viable and ubiquitous thanks to open-weight models. For businesses, especially in Nepal where $20 a month for a premium AI service can be expensive, open-source AI is a "big boon" for driving efficiency.

He envisions a future where every employee has their own AI agent to handle small tasks. This integration requires careful planning, including setting up "guardrails" to prevent unintended actions, as illustrated by his personal experience of an AI agent accidentally deleting a database. Businesses can implement AI in various ways:

  • Fully autonomous: AI handles tasks end-to-end, like researching competitors and generating reports.
  • Human-reviewed: AI completes tasks, but a human provides final approval, such as for social media posts.
  • Human-AI collaboration: AI acts as a brainstorming partner, simulating scenarios or refining strategies.

This shift means many white-collar jobs are likely to be automated first, leading to a potential rebalancing where physical labor, like that of electricians building data centers, might become more lucrative.

Nepal's Leapfrog Opportunity in Education

Prasish argues that Nepal has a unique opportunity to "leapfrog" by leveraging existing free AI models to solve local problems and address inefficiencies, rather than trying to build foundational models from scratch. He even wrote an article advocating for free AI access for every Nepali citizen, especially students, through open-weight models.

In an educational setting, for example, AI could automate marketing tasks for schools, generate newsletters for teachers on global educational trends, or even help build customized attendance or accounting systems at a fraction of the cost. The decreasing server requirements and increasing power of open-source models make local hosting economically feasible, fostering the development of local applications.

The most transformative potential lies in bringing AI to rural areas without internet access. Prasish describes the concept of installing open-source large language models like Gemma on mobile devices, allowing them to function as "supercomputers" or "local Wikipedias" offline. This capability could provide massive knowledge transfer in learning and health, empowering youth in remote communities to innovate and solve local problems using technology.

Navigating the New AI Landscape

For individuals and businesses, the key is a mindset shift. AI, Prasish emphasizes, doesn't replace skills but "amplifies" them. A good graphic designer can use AI to 10x or 50x their output and quality. The advice for the young generation is to "jump and start," experimenting with AI to push its boundaries and discover new applications.

Foundational knowledge remains crucial. Learning basic programming languages or marketing principles is essential because AI amplifies what you already know. Without a strong understanding of their field, individuals won't be able to effectively review AI's output or provide the necessary context. The shift from "vibe coding" (coding for fun) to "agentic coding" means AI now writes most of the code, with humans acting as orchestrators and reviewers.

Prasish suggests a new framework for skill development: dedicate 70% of one's work to leveraging AI, 10-15% to learning deep skills, and the remaining time to "human things" like networking and conferences. The rapid pace of innovation means continuous learning is paramount. Humans, with their senses, intuition, and emotions, will increasingly serve as the critical interface between the AI-powered digital world and the physical world.
